Abstract
Many states have used toll collection for financing highway construction and operations. Since the 1970s, development has been sought to automate the inherently labor-intensive toll collection process. Having demonstrated success in several transportation fields, many systems are currently experimenting with Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) technology. This paper reviews available AVI technology, functional system design, and up-to-date system implementation for automatic toll collection and potential traffic management activities.
