Abstract
Details are given of the European Train Control System (ETCS) project set up in 1990 by the European Council of Transport Ministers to consider harmonisation of the different European train control systems. It was decided to initially develop new train equipment, EUROCAB, which would be able to communicate with the variety of existing track equipment. For future lines new ETCS equipment will provide powerful modular equipment for data transmission between trains and ground. The sub-project EUROBALISE will provide spot data transmission and the sub- project EURORADIO will provide continuous data transmission by radio. Details are given of work being carried out to produce specifications for the functional requirements and system architecture of ETCS. Estimates are made of the cost of the project. This paper was presented at the EURAILSPEED 92 conference held in Brussels, April 27-29, 1992. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853180.
