Abstract
Nearly 7 million people ride trains daily underneath New York City, and the ridership is increasing. The trains run on 656 track miles, and the city needs more. During rush hour, 547 trains leave stations every one-and-a-half to ten minutes. The article discusses the recently approved Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) $16.46 billion 2000-2004 Capital Program, $10.07 billion of which is earmarked for the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) to purchase rolling stock and upgrade infrastructure. The program also includes installation of a communications-based train control system and automatic train supervision.
