Abstract
Commuter rail systems have expanded steadily in the United States since the first systems were carved out of defunct northeastern freight railroads in the early 1980s. Ridership has increased by more than 60 million passenger trips per year since 1980, according to American Public Transit Association (APTA). There now are 16 U.S. commuter rail systems, with several start-ups in varying stages of operation. As of July 1996, there were 3,250 miles of commuter rail operations. About 75 miles of new line were under construction and 87.7 miles of line were in the final design phase. ISTEA reauthorization tops commuter rail agenda as agencies add and expand service offerings. The article provides passenger, financial and equipment statistics.
