Abstract

The paper investigates the factors determining the susceptibility of reinforced concrete structures in the gulf region to deterioration through chloride attack. By studying the mechanism of chloride attack and the various factors which affect the rate of deterioration the vulnerability of particular structural elements is identified. The authors draw on observations of case studies to demonstrate the significance of structure location and climate in promoting and accelerating the deterioration. Methods of risk assessment of existing structures are reviewed and procedures are proposed for categorising and dealing with various degrees of deterioration in existing structures. Various methods of reducing the potential risks are discussed and recommendations are made regarding the future use of reinforced concrete as a construction medium in the gulf region.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 813594.
