Abstract

The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area is served by a world class transit bus and heavy rail subway system operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The system is the 3rd largest in the U.S., and works in close coordination with a number of other transit bus and commuter rail services operated by local governments and private contractors. This paper provides an overview of the Washington, D.C. transportation system network including the WMATA, suburban bus lines, ridership data, and recent innovations.
