DESIGNING BUS SERVICES TO MEET MARKET NEEDS

The Department of Infrastructure is presently working on a range of projects and initiatives with a view to providing a framework to improve the delivery of public transport services in Melbourne. The general aims of the improvements are to enable the general community access to appropriate levels of public transport services, to provide a quality of service that reduces the dependency on private cars, and to improve the overall utilisation of the public transportation network. This Public Transport Strategy outlines a requirement for the development of a Metropolitan Bus, Tram and Train Masterplan. Hence the occurrence of the Metropolitan Bus Plan project. It is a comprehensive improvement plan aimed at maximising community value from bus services throughout Melbourne. The Metropolitan Bus plan also includes a program for the upgrade of a cross town transit network. These two programs will be the focus of this paper.
