Abstract

This paper examines some of the problems encountered in the UK in the development of an integrated transport policy. Issues discusssed include a) personal mobility, b) politics, c) the demands of industry, d) changes in transport planning policy, e) transport integration, f) lobbies, g) involvement of the private sector and h) cost. A number of conclusions are drawn including the need for political consensus over transport policy, the need for a major effort in public persuasion in order to restrict personal mobility and the unlikelihood of local rail and light rail networks being developed due to their cost.
