In January 1986 the road laboratories of the Nordic countries decided to ask and were accepted in participation in the SHRP-LTPP (Strategic Highway Research Program-Long Term Pavement Performance) studies. Since then a great deal of effort has been put into setting up a Nordic LTPP-study, parallel to the US study. At the last LTPP workshop, September 1989 in Sweden the Nordic countries proposed to run a GPS pilot study in cooperation with SHRP. The paper outlines the pilot study plan and highlights the minimum requirements, set up by SHRP, for international involvement in the LTPP-study. Finally it gives the current status of the pilot study.
