Abstract

The prediction that over the next 25 years car use in the Netherlands will increase considerably, has important implications for national government policy. One of the possibilities for this policy is stimulation of public transport by taking steps to influence journey time as well as journey costs. Traditionally such steps are based on models, that primarily explain the selection behaviour between car and public transport in the light of journey time and costs. In this study the experience of the level of service of the journey is added to the traditional determinants of the selection behaviour between car and public transport. It appears from the results that experience of the level of service reduces the time and cost effects considerably. The change in selection behaviour between car and public transport is reduced by 50% if the influence of the level of service is taken into account. From the study it appears that if this is done there will be new possibilities to improve traditional models. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 811092. (TRRL)
