New Mexico's Program

This paper discusses the history of the use of alcohol ignition interlock devices to reduce the incidence of drunk driving in the state of New Mexico. It also notes the strengths and weaknesses of the ignition interlock program. Since the implementation of legislation in 2002, the installations of alcohol ignition interlock devices have increased significantly. One strength of the program is that information contained in a web-based database helps to identify any problems that may occur. Weaknesses of the program include agency overlap, and the specification of minimum penalties for repeat offenders that can deter offenders from becoming involved with the program.
