Abstract

The authors examine the effect that the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 had on airline safety. Specifically, they seek answers to the following four questions: 1) Has the replacement of trunk and local service airlines by commuter airlines decreased the safety of passengers arriving to, and departing from, those communities? 2) Have economic pressures due to deregulation led to decreased maintenance of aircraft, resulting in more aircraft accidents? 3) Has increased pressure on air traffic controllers compromised the safety of the air traffic control system? 4) Has the entry of new airlines into the market eroded the safety of the airline industry?
