Abstract

This article discusses San Francisco's passenger transit system, considered one of the best urban rail systems in North America. At least $2.6 billion in capital expansion projects are currently underway for the system, which includes a regional commuter rail, heavy rapid rail transit, light rail transit, streetcars and cable cars. The article describes planned expansions of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), which is closely aligned with central city planning, and upgrades to the Caltrain commuter rail service that include the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project. Also described is the public transit modal mix provided by the San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI), which runs light rail service and streetcar operations, and MUNI's planned expansions.
