Abstract
On lines with double track, each track is in principle reserved for running in one direction. The arrangements necessary so trains can run temporarily in both directions should one track be blocked are long and complicated. To overcome the problem, the SNCF has developed a new system for its double track lines. This falls halfway between two way working as such and the temporary single track system. Design of the system called permanent wrong-direction running equipment (I.P.C.S.) includes some advantages of two-way working and these are listed in the article.
