NEW TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES BASIS FOR ROAD TOLLING SCHEME

The Leicester Environmental Roll Tolling Scheme (LERTS) is a state-of-the-art electronic tolling system, similar to that used on European toll roads. It includes three toll stations and on-board units with a central management system. The project is using almost 100 volunteers to study the impact of road pricing on attempts to reduce traffic congestion and pollution and to assess the effect of tolling on traffic management strategies. Driver behavior modification is an additional aim of the project.
