Abstract

The Rail Services Division of Transport for London (TfL) was created in 2001 and is now known as London Rail. It's responsibilities are to implement the rail objectives in the Mayor's transport strategy, develop a Rail Plan for London, work with the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) to improve national rail service in London and to develop National Rail's contribution to an integrated public transport system for London. London's rail system suffers from overcrowding and underinvestment. Both national rail and the Underground are vital for the economic health of London. A London Rail Partnership Agreement defining working arrangements between London Rail and the SRA has been drafted. Progress with Crossrail 1, the East London Line extension and Thameslink 2000 is described. Funding and extensions to Docklands Light Rail are discussed.
