ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING OF BRIDGES FOR SCOUR

Abstract

A procedure is developed for assessing the risk of scour at bridges based on characteristics of the bridge and river. The method is designed to categorise a large number of bridges at reasonable cost: those found to be at highest risk can then be investigated in greater depth, and a plan of action to safeguard the bridge can be implemented as necessary. This strategy is illustrated by two recent projects where action has been taken to develop greater understanding of scour at particular bridges. The first of these involved monitoring scour at a bridge, while the second comprised detailed hydraulic calculations. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 858602.
