Abstract

The salient provisions in the package of measures announced in addition to the 1994 Budget measures on energy efficiency by the Ministry for the Environment in order to reduce New Zealand's carbon dioxide emissions are presented. The Government's policy objectives in this regard are discussed, also highlighting the measures' focus on agreements with industry, monitoring of emissions, renewable energy measures, and a possible carbon charge from 1997 if emissions are not appropriately reduced by then.
