Abstract
Greater Manchester's real time information system in the UK grew out of the Integration Project, launched in 1998. The key objectives of the Integration Project were to improve the quality of public transport in the following areas: passenger information, the waiting environment, services, ticketing, and connections and interchange. A network of Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) was developed with bus lanes and priority systems, improved bus stops, new low-floor buses, better lighting and more pedestrian crossing points. Originally, interest in a real-time information system came about as part of the QBC programme. The perceived benefits of a real-time information system are considered. A partnership was formed between GMPTE and four bus operators to introduce the system. Phase 1 covered services on six QBCs and three other services including the free Metro Shuttle services. The contract for Phases 1 and 2 were awarded to Infocell Technology. The challenges associated with fitting the equipment to the buses, connecting to the ticket machine, obtaining the data, and maintaining the equipment and systems are considered.
