Abstract

It is known that residual resistance consists of wavemaking resistance, spray resistance and water head resistance. To reduce residual resistance it is necessary to study how to reduce each of these components. It is theoretically possible to design a hull form for which all components are minimized, however, the hull form is difficult to achieve. The design of such a hull form is studied, and a practical form which has small spray at the bow is obtained. However, the form does not give small wavemaking resistance though it is theoretically possible to reduce wavemaking resistance. This paper discusses how wavemaking resistance is reduced on the spray free condition. The result shows that diminishing bow spray and reducing wavemaking resistance are affected by each other, and hence it is impossible to reduce both of them simultaneously.
