Abstract
Recycling of asphalt pavements increased markedly in the mid 1970s, when the Arab oil embargo caused inflation of construction costs and new recycling equipment was developed. This paper gives a brief overview of the current practices utilized in recycling asphalt pavements. Five recycling methods: 1) cold planing, 2) hot recycling (at plant), 3) hot-in-place recycling, 4) cold in-place recycling, and 5) full depth reclamation are covered. Strategies for selecting an appropriate recycling method are outlined. Other topics discussed include: recycling specifications used by various user agencies and structural design of recycled pavements.
