Recent advances in lay-barge technology are surveyed, showing a gathering momentum of progress, with the benefits achieved by third-generation vessels still to be fully appreciated. The need to develop oil and gas finds in deeper and rougher waters has stimulated a range of new technical advances in pipelay capabilities. These concern vessel stability, pipe transfer systems, pipe storage capacity, pipe makeup, welding, and tensioning.
