Abstract
Rail transit executives are looking for changes in control systems technology in order to operate trains in a more efficient and safe manner. This article relates experiences by different rail transit agencies and some of the changes that are being implemented. Some agencies are increasing their use of design/build construction, while others are pursuing integrated control systems. A shift towards microprocessor-based train control systems has led to a growing demand for subsystem communications via networks, local area networks, and wide area networks. These networks allow for the sharing of information which can be used in train scheduling, train control, and passenger information. Communications-based train control (CBTC) and automatic train control/positive train control (ATC/PTC) are being used by agencies, as well as wireless traffic management systems for maintenance-of-way workers (MOW).
