Abstract

This article describes light rail projects in several South Korean cities. In Seoul, a ninth metro line is under construction that will connect the domestic airport at Kimpo with the city center. Eventually, the ninth line will connect with a high-speed line to Incheon International Airport, which is currently under construction. Three metro extension projects in the Greater Seoul area, as well as projects in the southern port of Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and other areas are also described. Experts believe light rail may be a better alternative than heavy metro construction, particularly in the mountainous areas of the Korean peninsula. Finally, a good safety record, cost savings, and environmental benefits make it a powerful alternative to traditional road systems.
