Abstract

Expansion of the metro system in Seoul, Korea, continues as traffic congestion grows. The eight metro lines have created a network of 287km that carries around seven million people daily. With the original line opening in 1974, construction efforts are focused on a ninth line, which unlike the other lines, will include an element of private sector funding. Line 9 will most likely be the last conventional heavy metro line in Seoul, as the city is making plans for two express subway lines and six light rail routes.
