Abstract
Traffic pressures on road systems have been increasing steadily and are greatest in town centres and urban areas in general. Policies adopted in London to moderate traffic congestion by control of parking provision are outlined. It is argued however that parking control alone is unlikely to be sufficient to deal with the problem of traffic congestion in town centres. Supplementary licences and road pricing are discussed as alternatives but it is pointed out that both have unsolved problems. It is concluded that the long term solution may require a combination of policies and that in the short term a programme of congestion management may be the best alternative. The number of the covering abstract of the textbook is irrd abstract no 212297. /TRRL/
