Abstract

Progress with plans for a light rail scheme in Edinburgh, UK, are described. Original proposals for three tram lines have been modified and it now appears likely that the only line to be built in the short term would be an amalgamation of parts of Lines 1 and 2 linking Newhaven via Leith Walk and Princes Street to Edinburgh Airport. Parallel bus services on Leith Walk and Princes Street would be withdrawn. The costs of the new phased approach are outlined. The attitudes of local people to the tram system are mixed. Concerns include the disruption caused by construction, fears that government funding could be withdrawn, the justification for the whole tram scheme in transport terms, and the impact of trams on existing bus services. The tram project is being planned by Transport Initiatives Edinburgh, TIE, and the trams would be operated by Transdev Edinburgh Tram.
