Abstract

This article concerns the developmental problems of tram transport in the city of Rome, Italy. Plans for new tram routes have not been brought to completion, and tram routes that have been implemented do not offer interchanges with the metro, although some interchange with suburban rail services is possible. New low-floor trams introduced on the routes are smooth in ride, accessible and fast. Problems in development stem from the difficulty of restructuring the centre of an ancient city: there are plans to introduce battery-operated trolleybuses to the inner city. At present, trams only carry five per cent of public transport passengers.
