This article examines ways in which high-speed rail may reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in our heavily-travelled urban areas. Areas discussed include: Federal initiatives for high-speed rail development; Amtrak's development of high-speed trains; ISTEA provisions for high-speed rail; rights-of-way issues between passenger and freight rail; and environmental aspects of high-speed rail.
