Abstract
Modern durability technology for concrete structures is founded on consistent engineering models describing transport and deterioration mechanisms. Assessment can be made more target oriented and repairs can be tailored to individual requirements once these models are available. Currently the engineering profession can reach far in this direction provided already available knowledge is utilized. Work with bridges has spearheaded this development. Multidisciplinary research, development, and engineering education is urgently needed. Misleading conclusions can be drawn from a maintenance strategy based solely on visual inspections. Bridge management and maintenance systems provide valuable tools for the overall organisation of bridge maintenance and repair. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 850834.
