Abstract

This article traces the evolution of mass transit in the United States and its role in and relationship to the shape and form of cities. It then describes the transit marketplace. The character of urban land use which determines the success of mass transit. The article concludes with recommendations to establish land use/transportation policies prior to the gridlock effects of rampant development.
