Abstract
This paper examines the state-of-the-art in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies. It first defines ITS. This is followed by a discussion of the overall benefits of ITS deployments in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The paper then examines typical examples of ITS projects for improving traffic safety. These analyses are categorized into the following application areas: 1) Centralized Traffic Signal Control Systems; 2) Incident Management Systems; 3) Collision Avoidance Systems; 4) Intelligent Cruise Control Systems; 5) Mayday Systems; and, 6) Automated Highway Systems.
