Abstract

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)/ Telematics Systems and Services have a great potential to improve traffic and transport quality and especially traffic safety. During the last years the reliability of such systems and services has been improved, commercial applications are successfully launched beyond others within the insurance and the automotive industry. The European Union (EU) commission is currently preparing an ITS action plan and a directive laying down “The framework for the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in the field of road transport and for interfaces with other transport modes”. The objective of this paper is to show how ITS/Telematic systems and services can contribute to improve traffic safety by giving several examples.
