Abstract
A reduction in lateral forces when a train is negotiating a curve has been demonstrated in experiments by Japan's Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) featuring a microscopic rib located towards the outside of a wheel tread. Development by RTRI of such a wheel is underway. Details of tests of the wheelsets using test vehicles for trials on curved track are presented here. The results show that use of the micro-rib decreases the likelihood of derailment, as well as helps to cut vehicle maintenance costs.
