Abstract
It is generally recognised that public transport must play a greater role in providing urban accessibility into the future. To make bus services attractive to the community they need to be competitive in terms of journey time and ride quality, with the ever-increasing number of private cars. Therefore, there needs to be careful consideration given to the allocation of road space. The creation of priority space for buses with the potential to carry 50 plus passengers in one vehicle is essential. Bus services need to operate through the centre of residential development cells on local distributor roads to maximise their catchment potential and are therefore often subjected to local area traffic schemes. This paper aims to put these issues into perspective. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E208097.
