Abstract
The automobile will continue to play a major role in the urban transportation system for many years to come. However, the role of other transportation systems must be recognised. To cater for future changes in the prevailing modes of transport, long term flexibility must be built into the transport system. There is a need to achieve a balance between public and private transport which realistically reflects society's needs. Regardless of whether the future emphasis is on buses or private cars, a sound urban road system will be required, either to feed a rapid transit system or to connect with freeways. In this paper, the way in which future traffic volumes are predicted, together with ways of providing for this traffic, are discussed. The importance of good communication between the planners and the public is recognised (a).
