Abstract

A mathematical framework for the analysis of shear band development in geomaterials is presented. The formalism is predicated upon the assumption that shear bands arise as a result of a constitutive instability characterized by bifurcation theory. In order to gain proper physical insight, classical bifurcation relations are expanded and particularized into well defined stress boundary conditions with material behaviour governed by simple yield criteria. It is seen that the location of a bifurcation point leads to the definition of a bifurcation surface in stress space which reverts to the failure surface in associated plasticity formulation. A finite element formulation based on the foregoing mathematical framework is used to capture localized modes.(a) for the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD 824029.
