Abstract

Looking to the future, the Arizona and Maricopa County Departments of Transportation formed AZTech, a unique partnership of public agencies and private companies, to work together to improve Arizona's regional transportation. In 1996, AZTech won a spot as one of four national showcases using intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology to improve travel in metropolitan areas. AZTech was granted $7.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of the national ITS program TimeSaver's Model Deployment Initiative (MDI) project to serve as a model to provide real-life examples of technology's transportation potential in metropolitan areas. AZTech team members from over 30 public agencies and private companies have been working together over the past few years to create an international showcase of regional transportation using advanced ITS technology. AZTech's vision was to build upon the current freeway management system to reduce travel time and costs, make travel safer for the public, and improve the quality of life. In the process, AZTech has worked to build one of the most advanced traffic management systems in the world.
