Abstract

This article describes the various examples of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) deployment in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in California. It examines in detail the Transportation Management Center (TMC) which is jointly staffed by the California Department of Transportation and the California Highway Patrol. The TMC is involved in the following applications: speed- detecting roadway embedded traffic sensors, traffic surveying cameras variable message signs, ramp meters, highway advisory radio, freeway service patrols, and emergency call boxes.
