Abstract
In the past few years, a great deal of interest has been generated in the field of electric propulsion systems for modern ships. There are two categories of marine electrical propulsion plants: A-C and D-C systems. D-C systems are applied primarily in the low moderate range, while A-C systems are most often found in the medium to high power ranges. There are special characteristics of each of these two systems which are explained in depth in the article. The methods of control of each system, as well as applicable machinery and drive mechanisms, are also described in some detail.
