Abstract
In advance of the planned relaunch of tilting trains on the UK's West Coast Main Line (WCML) in 2002, Virgin Trains and Alstom demonstrated 200 km/h running with a pre-series Class 390 Pendolino Britannico trainset in a publicity run at the Alstom Midlands Test Centre in July 2001. The event included presentations from rolling stock leasing company Angel Trains, Alstom and Virgin as well as flypasts and fireworks. The media and senior managers from the UK railway industry were given the chance to experience tilting at up to 6 with the train running at 177 km/h. Trials of overhead line electrical resonance, breaking, ride quality and tilting are to be conducted on the WCML . The Pendolino sets are expected to be introduced into commercial service in March 2002. The main contractors for the Pendolino Britannico are listed.
