Abstract

Ridership gains, new starts and extensions and building bi-partisan support in Congress marked high points for a vital segment of public transportation industry: rail transit, in 1996. Among the heavy rail systems, ridership in Los Angeles grew by almost 9% in the first half of 1995 in contrast to the same period in 1994. Other cities listed as examples of substantial activity include: Baltimore, Hartford, Boston, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and Riverside, California.
