Abstract
The Danville-Riverside Bridge carries State Route 54 over the North Branch of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. The need to replace the 96-year-old truss bridge was identified in 1982. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's regular bridge inspection program found the 7-span, pin-connected bowstring arch-truss bridge to be structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This caused serious concern for the Danville and Riverside communities as the bridge is a key link between these cities and also to the surrounding region. This article describes the design and construction of the new Danville-Riverside Bridge, a 7-span continuous composite steel girder structure measuring 1,440 ft. long and 54 ft. wide. The bridge has two 12-ft. travel lanes and an 8-ft-wide sidewalk on its downstream side.
