Abstract
An extensive system of permanent HOV lanes is planned for the Dallas urbanized area. Until these permanent treatments can be funded and implemented, the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) have been pursuing short-term or interim HOV lane projects that would enhance public transportation and overall mobility. The Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) has performed feasibility studies for the interim HOV lanes and continues to evaluate the effectiveness of the lanes as they are implemented. This paper discusses the design and operational issues associated with each of the interim HOV lanes to include access and egress, enforcement of the occupancy requirement, and travel time savings to HOV lane users.
