Abstract
The Cross City Tunnel in Sidney, Australia, comprises 7km of drive and cut and cover tunnels. The tunnel is intended to reduce the number of vehicles that travel over Sidney's roads each day by 90,000, and to decrease commute times significantly. The project is being funded and constructed, and, when open, will be operated by, the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA). The RTA has had cope with underground rail lines and basements in constructing the tunnel. In fact, the tunnel was one of the most challenging projects in Sidney's history. The tunnel's 7km road tunnels are divided into twin dual- carriageway mainline tunnels and four carriageway connection tunnels. The tunnel also consists of seven portals, three Y junctions and seven reinforced concrete bridge decks.
