Abstract

The 6 counties that make up the Chicago area are served by 3 public transit systems: the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), which operates urban bus and heavy rail, Metra commuter rail, and Pace suburban bus. Together they serve over 200 million rail riders/year and about 330 million bus passengers. Metra operates on 12 rail lines with 240 stations, while the CTA has 7 lines (with a total of 10 branches) and 140 stations. Pace operates on 234 bus routes and the CTA on 129. Overall, however, the CTA, on which this paper focuses, provides around 80% of all transit trips in the 6 county regions and serves 38 suburbs as well as the city of Chicago.
