Abstract

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is one of the nation's most extensive transit systems, operating five different modes of transportation, including four types of rail service: Commuter, transit, interurban and light rail. SEPTA's railroad division alone accounts for some 450 miles of track operated by the authority -- 276 of that owned by SEPTA, the rest run over Amtrak and Conrail rights-of-way. This article discusses SEPTA's capital improvement project, the RailWorks project. One showpiece of the RailWorks project is a 3,000-foot, more-than-60-span viaduct, which SEPTA was able to successfully rehabilitate, rather than replace.
