Abstract

The Loma Prieta earthquake has increased awareness among engineers, transportation officials and the general public about quake safety and the need to shore up bridges and viaducts, and the process of seismic retrofitting. It is noted that few areas of the United States are completely free from the risks of an earthquake. Studies have identified 'at risk' bridges in California which are now being retrofitted. The Federal Highway Administration is working with states to analyze their own double-deck structures for seismic loading and retrofitting the structures where appropriate. The FHWA has developed a training program, and has embarked on a state-by-state tour to raise awareness and brief state departments of transportation on the issue of seismic retrofitting. Retrofitting techniques are listed and discussed. It is expected that the engineering community will formulate and adopt improved design standards for earthquake resistant structures.
