Abstract
The state-of-practice for seismic design of highway bridges has evolved over more than 50 years in the U.S. Currently, all new Federal-aid highway bridges designed and constructed in the U.S. must consider earthquake demands. There are not nationwide requirements for evaluating in-service bridges for seismic vulnerabilities as yet, but many states have initiated vulnerability screening and retrofitting programs. Such programs are likely to increase the overall seismic resistance of the national highway system in the U.S.
