Abstract

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation's massive West Rail project is nearing completion, but the company is already pressing on with three new multi-million dollar schemes to further extend the rail network. The article examines the biggest of these projects, the 11.4 km Ma On Shan Railway on which construction started in 2000. Recognizing the need to minimize land severance and disruption to the community during construction, most of the railway is being built on viaduct with only a small section at grade.
